Ingvill Fossheim (Norway/Sápmi/Finland) is doctoral candidate at Aalto University, with 20+ years of professional experience as costume designer and scenographer, producer and curator. Her artistic work and research seek to orient costume design praxis towards more environmentally responsible, resilient, and regenerative material approaches. She is of Norwegian, Swedish and Sámi heritage, learning motherhood since 2011, and she lives and works from Tromsø and Helsinki.
Her doctoral thesis ‘BioCostume: Experimental Costume Design with Biobased Co-Actants’ (2020-) is located at the intersection of contemporary costume design, systems thinking, and biobased material development; of aesthetics and ethics. Through experimental costume design praxis this artistic research explores how unstable and impermanent biobased materials can afford aesthetic qualities to an artistic work and induce value beyond the scope of the live performative event. She is affiliated with the research groups Costume in Focus (Aalto ARTS Department of Film) and Fashion/Textile Futures (Aalto ARTS Department of Design). Her doctoral research is supported by the Research Council of Finland Strategic Research Council grant number 327330 (BioColour. Bio Based Dyes and Pigments for Colour Palette) 2020-2022, and her artistic practice is supported by Arts Council Norway Government grant for artists 2021-2022 and Arts Promotion Centre Finland State artist grant 2025-2027.
